Principles
The rules we hold ourselves to.
A public record is only useful if it's trustworthy — and only trustworthy if its rules are public too.
- Public data only. Every figure traces to a named federal file with the date we retrieved it and the hash of the exact file we processed.
- Programs aren't mixed. UDS, MIPS, and Hospital Compare measures follow different specifications on different populations — we label each and never compare across them. How to read the data →
- A real corrections process. If we've republished something wrong, there's a clear way to tell us and a public record of what changed.
- No pay-to-rank, ever. No organization can pay to look better, rank higher, or make a number disappear.
- Free regardless. Built by the team behind the Quaility platform — and the Index stays free and public whether or not anyone buys anything.
